Briefing of Employee Recognition

Employee recognition is the acknowledgement of a company's staff for exemplary performance. Essentially, the goal of employee recognition in the workplace is to reinforce particular behaviors, practices or activities that result in better performance and positive business results. (Nikos Andriotis 2018)

Why is employee recognition that important?

Recognition helps employees see that their company values then and their contributions to the success of their team and the company overall. This is particularly key when organizations grow or change. It helps employees build a sense of security in their value to the company, motivating them to continue great work.

  • It stabilize the work place.
  • It increases productivity.
  • It improves team culture.
  • It engenders trust between managers and employees.
  • It lowers the employee stress and absenteeism.
  • It improves the customer experience.

How to recognize employees in the workplace

  • Make it personal
It's critical to be specific, personal and accurate. Use positive words, and demonstrate to the employee that you actually understand their accomplishments.

  • Provide opportunities
Some workers doesn't get chance to excel because of the nature of their jobs or reduced expectations for certain types of work. Employees who do their jobs well, should be able to earn opportunities for expanded responsibilities and training for their job advancement.

  • Magnify recognition
While verbal communication is clearly, the most effective way to recognize employees, the best strategy is to back up by publicizing employee accomplishments across multiple forums such as company newsletters, dashboard and in team meetings.

  • Motivate with financial incentives
Although financial incentives aren't always the best motivators, they can certainly demonstrate appreciation for work well-performed. The best financial incentives are more open-ended and unpredictable because they motivate people to work their best at all times.

  • Give holiday rewards and bonuses
The best practices for awarding holiday bonuses include offering a standard bonus or gift package and rewarding people for outstanding performance with special award, extra cash bonuses, holiday gifts or recognition for yearly performance.

  • Facilitate peer-to-peer recognition
Employees often prefer recognition for their peers than acknowledgement at the office, so many companies implement peer-to-peer recognition programs to millennials and the new generation of flexible workers.

  • Recognize people's passions
Workers love to be recognized for their outside activities, hobbies and passions because it prevents people from feeling as if they are just cogs in the business machine. Passion can also work as rewards in their own right.

  • Use technology and social media to to publicize accomplishments.
People don't live in a vacuum in today's environment of instant communications, so it's important to publicize value accomplishments and even human interest items in the company's social media forums. (Calaire Hastwell 2020)

Employee recognition and positive motivation are powerful tools for getting the best out of each employee. The tips outlined above are good starting points, but depending on your business and industry, you can custom-design other rewards and recognition programs that reflect your organization's particular needs.

  1. Employees like to be recognized be it a single word of appreciation or a gesture from his/her boss. Various organizations recognize their staff differently. May be its on performance, honesty, punctuality, and other factors. However selection criteria should be transparent in this exercise to motivate all staff and to show they all have equal opportunity.
